South Orange and Maplewood will be offering various events for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist
attacks:
• Maplewood will host a ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Hilton Branch of Maplewood Memorial Library on Sept. 11. A piece of the World Trade Center steel obtained by the township has been installed there and is also to be used as a memorial spot in addition to the plaque and tree planted at the Maplewood train station in honor of two Maplewood residents — Douglas MacMillan Cherry, 38, and Kirsten L. Christophe, 39 — who died that day.
• On Sept. 11., a commemoration and prayer will be at 8:30 a.m. by the Christopher Faughnan Memorial at New Waterlands Field. An in-memorium will be at 9:58 a.m. at the South Orange Fire Department firehouse on Sloan Street, followed by a moment of silence. The public is invited into the firehouse at 10 a.m. A commemoration in film will be from noon to 6 p.m. at SOPAC and the village will observe a national moment of remembrance at 1 p.m. Later, a candlelight vigil will be held at the SOPAC circle featuring a musical interlude at 6:15 p.m. followed by the program with village President Alex Torpey, the Board of Trustees, clergy, guest speakers and music at 7 p.m.
