The Maplewood-South Orange Packers have begun registration for the fall youth football and cheerleading season for ages 5 to 16. The first in-person registration will be March 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Clinton Elementary School’s cafeteria, 27 Berkshire Road.
The goal of the organization is to teach participants the fundamentals of football and the spirit of cheerleading with an emphasis on good sportsmanship, self-discipline and team cooperation. The Packers are part of the national Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., the largest youth football, cheer and dance program in the country.
“Our focus for the 2010 Packer season is to empower, condition and continue to enhance our children’s ability to perform at their peak,” said President Hanifah Crawley.
Parents may download registration forms at
www.msopackers.org or pick them up at the registration event. In-person registrations will be held once a month throughout the spring, but early registration is recommended. Parents also may mail the forms to P.O. Box 203, Maplewood, NJ 07040.
The Packers offer flag football to children ages 5 to 7, and tackle from 7 to 16. Tackle football players are placed on teams based on both age and weight, according to Pop Warner rules for safety. Cheerleaders are placed based on age.
The Packers season begins Aug. 2. An optional conditioning clinic will be offered July 26-30 at Underhill Field. Games are played on Sundays, usually with four home games and four away games. There also is a Saturday cheerleading competition in October.
The Packers organization is run by volunteers, and all families are encouraged to get involved and help with game-day operations, coaching or board membership. It is open to all Maplewood and South Orange residents. Out-of-town residents must contact the Packers commissioner before registering.
