Nieves sparks CHS football past Kearny in the opener

Denzel Nieves displayed his all-around versatility, accounting for all four touchdowns for the Columbia High School varsity football team in a convincing 28-7 win over Kearny on Sept. 11 in the season opener at Underhill Field.
Nieves ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, had three receptions for 46 yards and returned a punt 70 yards
for a touchdown.
After Kearny opened the scoring in the first quarter, Nieves ran for a 71-yard TD to tie the score at 7. In the second quarter, Nieves scored on a three-yard run, followed by his punt return for a score. Nieves capped the scoring with a one-yard TD in the third quarter.
The Cougars are idle this weekend and will host East Side on Sept. 25 in a Super Essex Conference game at 1 p.m.
