New sod for DeHart field

The entire athletic field at Maplewood’s DeHart Park has to be torn out and resodded because of a mistake made during the installation, the township said.



Plastic netting is throughout the grass field, said Mayor Vic De Luca, who expressed concern that someone might get injured playing there.

DeHart field to be remediated

An undetermined amount of the sports field at DeHart Park in Maplewood will have to be resodded next spring because of a problem with plastic netting beneath the sod, a township official said Dec. 6.



Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan said the township has had discussions with Turco Golf, the Suffern, N.Y.-based firm that installed the field, about the company needing to fix things.

Separate gunpoint robberies in Maplewood could be related, police say

Two robbers clad in ski masks and one donning a handgun stole cell phones and more from local teenagers last week, police said. 

Two teenagers, one male and one female, were approached by three black males on Franklin Place, near North Terrace, on July 22 at 12:30 a.m. Two of the three suspects were wearing ski masks and one of the suspects produced a silver handgun as they approached the victims.

Viet memorial plaque listing questioned

Daniel J. Heffernan of Maplewood went to Vietnam like many men of his day, only to be one of more than 58,000 Americans killed in the war.

Overhaul of DeHart field comes to a close

The playing field at DeHart Park is expected to reopen to the public next month, as the township completes the $1.28 million renovation on schedule.

Since November 2009, Maplewood installed a field made of three types of grass, an irrigation system, park and field lighting, and a new path.
