DNA evidence found at the crime scene allegedly links a Newark man with the slaying last year of a Maplewood resident he had met in a chat room, a county prosecutor said Nov. 29.

Alcohol 'appears to be a factor' in fatal crash that lands Maplewood man in jail, authorities say

A Maplewood man was charged with killing another motorist during a car crash Aug. 8 on I-280 East and First Street in Newark, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Newark man indicted for transgender murder in Maplewood

A Newark man was indicted on June 17 on charges that he killed a transgender woman in Maplewood last year, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said June 20.

Authorities also alleged that Victoria Carmen White’s “gender identity” was a factor in why Alrashim Chambers allegedly shot her to death on Sept. 12, 2010 in her cousin's apartment on Jacoby Street after coming home from night club in Irvington.

3 murder suspects arraigned

The second suspect in the shooting of a transgender female in Maplewood has been caught.

Alrashim N. Chambers, charged with murder and related weapons offenses, is being held on $1 million, Essex County jail records showed Oct. 25.

Newark layoffs could affect public safety in towns

St. Joseph's fate hinges on parents

Parents at St. Joseph Elementary School in Maplewood have a chance to keep their children’s school from closing if they can increase enrollment in the next four weeks.

St. Joseph School closes its doors after eight decades of service

St. Joseph School in Maplewood will close June 30, after 80 years due to financial problems, the Archdiocese of Newark said Monday.

The Roman Catholic parish was no longer able to provide a subsidy to the prekindergarten to grade eight school, said archdiocese spokesman Jim Goodness.
