The Maplewood Garden Club Presents Sid Jones, “An American Gardener at Great Dixter” at Maplewood Memorial Library

Sid Jones began learning to garden as a child from his grandmother and both parents, and has gardened for over 40 years at his home in Randolph, NJ. At the February MGC meeting Sid will share his experiences and photos from the symposia he attended at the magnificent garden at Great Dixter, in Northiam, England; the 500 year old home and gardens that belonged to Christopher Lloyd, one of the best known writers on plantings and planting design, renowned for his use of color in the garden. The meeting will be held Monday, February 6, 7:30pm at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., Maplewood, NJ. Maplewood Garden Club Starting Seeds and Cuttings at Maplewood Memorial Library

Winter may be right around the corner but it’s never too early to start planning next season’s garden. At the January meeting of the Maplewood Garden Club, Ben Lowell will conduct a lecture on techniques for successful seed starting and propagation of plant cuttings. Topics will include scarification, cold stratification, and soft-wood cuttings. Come learn what you need to do to grow your favorite plants from seed, or propagate more of your most beautiful houseplants or shrubs using cuttings from the original plant. The Maplewood Garden Club Presents Anna Nakada, A Master of Ikebana Ikebana arrangements emphasize the beauty of nature using a minimal number of elements. In this ancient discipline, nature and humanity are brought together through the artistic juxtaposition of natural shapes and beautiful lines. At the December meeting of the Maplewood Garden Club Ms. Nakada, a master of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana will present a program about this ancient art of flower arranging. Nakada has traveled worldwide demonstrating this disciplined art form and teaches at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Ikebana International Chapters around the country. The Maplewood Garden Club Presents Award Winning Horticulturist and Author, Ray Rogers at Maplewood Memorial Library

Ray Rogers held a trowel before he could walk, and has since won hundreds of awards for his outstanding exhibits. He worked at the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia, PA, and the American Horticultural Society’s River Farm in Alexandria, VA. He then went on to edit and co-author numerous horticultural titles, all while winning those blue ribbons. Ray is also a home gardener and an amateur hybridizer. At the November meeting of the Maplewood Garden Club, he will present a program on Cacti and Other Succulents, great plant categories to occupy gardeners during the cold winter months to come. THE SUBJECT IS WATER GARDENS AT THE MAPLEWOOD GARDEN CLUB MEETING, MONDAY, APRIL 4, 7:30PM Kenneth Pettis, Maplewood’s former Township Committee Chairperson, has been the organizer and director of the Maplewood/South Orange Pond Tour for the past six years.  Twenty-six ponds in the two towns, Millburn and Short Hills have been exhibited.  Ken will guide us through the planning, planting, care, fertilization, watering, and pest control problems associated with establishing a water garden on one’s own property.  He will also cover the ecosystem that may arise around the pond, including dragonflies, tadpoles, frogs, turtles and birds. MYTHICAL SCARABS BROUGHT TO LIFE at Maplewood Memorial Library

Everybody knows that the Japanese beetle is a common garden pest, but did you know that this common beetle is only one of a large complex of scarabs that attack plants in New Jersey? Presented by the Maplewood Garden Club, Richard Buckley’s lecture “Understanding White Grubs in Turfgrass” will introduce you to New Jersey’s white grub complex.  Attendees will learn the identity of this diverse cast of characters as well as scarab biology, identification and scouting techniques, and practical control practices including chemical, cultural, and biological approaches. Richard Buckley is the Director of Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Laboratory and an instructor teaching courses in diseases and insect pests. The Maplewood Garden Club program will be presented Monday, January 3, 2011, 7:30 PM at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., Maplewood, NJ.
