About us

Our Mission: To provide a place where community life is enhanced by the visual arts, and where artists can exhibit, educate, work and interact. The center complements the township's exisiting program of performing arts.

1978 Maplewood Arts Center, a community center dedicated to the visual arts, opened its doors in April 2002 in a space donated to the township by local sculptor June Carter. The center features art exhibitions, classes for adults and children, and the Contemporary Artists forum where artists interact and discuss their work. Film programs, performances readings are also held at the center.

Activities at 1978 are organized by an independent advisory board that reflects the diverse creative community of Maplewood and South Orange, which works under the supervision of the Maplewood Township Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

Start Changing the World Thru Art

1978 Maplewood Arts Center is sponsoring significant beading workshops, "Bead for Peace." The project's mission is to support women's organizations and individuals who foster work for reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians. The program is directed by Maya Bloom, an educator, noted crafts person, botanist and a native of Jerusalem

The workshops are Monday, March 22 from 1 to 3:30 PM and from 7 to 9 PM as well as Sunday, April 11 from 12 to 3 PM. To register go to mayabloom@yahoo.com . Finished projects will be exhibited at the Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall.

The impact of war and terror in the Middle East and the world cannot be resolved only politically. “Women today, from all religions and backgrounds are ready to take an active part to make positive change and should be supported. Women give birth to the next generation. Their voice, actions and role is wider today and must be supported and encouraged.” Reports Maya.

Beading is an ancient skill that women traditionally took part in since early times, throughout the world. It is a skill, occupation, a means of artistic endeavor, expression, recognized all over the world. It can be done individually as well as collaboratively.

Mya reports “My idea came after volunteering among villages in Israel after the 2007 war. I met families who live near the northern border of Israel and friends who live across from the Gaza border. I observed the impact of long time war on their life.”

“My motivation came as a crafter with over thirty years ivolvement in the arts and realizing its powerful impact on human life.”
