Everybody knows that the Japanese beetle is a common garden pest, but did you know that this common beetle is only one of a large complex of scarabs that attack plants in New Jersey? Presented by the Maplewood Garden Club, Richard Buckley’s lecture “Understanding White Grubs in Turfgrass” will introduce you to New Jersey’s white grub complex. Attendees will learn the identity of this diverse cast of characters as well as scarab biology, identification and scouting techniques, and practical control practices including chemical, cultural, and biological approaches. Richard Buckley is the Director of Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Laboratory and an instructor teaching courses in diseases and insect pests. The Maplewood Garden Club program will be presented Monday, January 3, 2011, 7:30 PM at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., Maplewood, NJ. The meeting is open to the public, admission is free and refreshments will be served.
